History

It is probably thanks to Leonard Pountney, founder of The Pountney Clinic, that cosmetic surgery in Britain has developed such a fine reputation. He recognised that what had become relatively commonplace in the USA as early as the 1950s would eventually find its way to Britain. His dream was to provide this important facility for everyone irrespective of his or her financial capability. He believed that an important improvement procedure should cost no more than a reasonable holiday and as such should also bring longer lasting benefits to the individual such as improved self-esteem and greater personal confidence.

In 1985 he decided that it was time to move from his existing and very popular clinic where many thousands had received treatment (including the famous). He wanted to develop a completely new form of hospital dedicated entirely to Cosmetic Surgery. After two years of planning and development he opened his new hospital in 1987.

The Pountney Clinic was the first specialised purpose-built cosmetic surgical hospital in Britain. We were the first cosmetic surgery organisation to be allowed to advertise on radio and later, having satisfied the advertising authorities and relevant medical committees, on television.

Latest Developments
In 2003 following 16 years of almost continual redevelopment the decision was taken to further improve our patient facilities. Our Surgeons and management researched larger ‘acute’ hospitals that had an empathy with Cosmetic Surgery. At the same time we sourced new Consulting Rooms to make it easier for patients to attend consultations.
